Virtual Space        2023



FLOWING TILES is a virtual space project that creates a conceptual transnational space for Southeast Asia's Fujian diaspora. It explores the mixed identities of migrants between Fujian and Malaysia and their impact on space shaping. The project aims to express immigrants' overlapping identity confusions through virtual experiences.













I.

     FLOOR TILES




Flower tile is an unique architectural elements in southern Fujian. During my undergraduate years studying in  Xiamen, I became interested in this culture.
                     














II.

     HISTORY OF XIA NANYANG




Tile culture transferred to Fujian during a period of history called XiaNanYang, which was the largest migration phenomenon in China. Domestic war at
that time forced Fujian people to went to Malaysia. Immigrants moved between the two places, bringing a mix of different cultures.

They seek a blended identity through spatial changes, yet fail to fully integrate into either region. I hope to create a virtual space, to help migrants settle their overlapping identities.

The arrangement of space was based on the structure of flower tiles.

This project links immigrants' fluid identity symbols via Fujian’s tile culture, crafting a virtual space for Malaysia’s Fujian diaspora. Here, the cultures of both regions and the transnational identities of the immigrants converge and conflict, striving for ultimate reconciliation.
